Temporary Housing, or better termed "Additional Living Expense (ALE)" can be defined as follows:
The additional money an insured necessarily incurs to maintain their normal standard of living.
So, after a devastating fire loss that makes their insured home uninhabitable, the cost to rent a temporary home is covered, along with the cost of rental furniture and other furnishings.
If the insured had a pet, but the landlord does not permit pets, then the cost of a shelter for the pet would qualify as an ALE expense the insurance adjuster would consider covering.
If the insured lives one mile from work, but the temporary home is eleven miles from work, then the insured may claim twenty miles (round trip) per day as an additional living expense. (22 miles round trip minus 2 miles round trip = 20). Only the additional 20 miles driven, not the full 22 miles may be claimed as an additional living expense.
There is usually a few weeks from the date of the fire to the date the insured finds suitable temporary housing. During this time, they may have taken up residency in a hotel. This hotel stay may be claimed as an ALE expense. If the hotel does not have suitable cooking facilities, then the additional cost to eat at a restaurant vs. the cost of cooking meals at home may be claimed as an additional living expense. In those cases where the insured moves in with family members for a few weeks, it would be reasonable to help with expenses at your family's home. This expense may be claimed as an additional living expense.
If the insured has fully paid for solar panels, making the cost of monthly electricity zero but the temporary home has no panels, then the cost of electricity at the temporary home would be considered as a reimbursable ALE expense.

So, what does our office do to help with this portion of your claim? Usually, most insurance companies will farm out the task of finding and paying for temporary housing to a third-party vendor. The third-party vendors do not work for your insurance company and are not located locally, so our intervention is usually necessary to ensure these third-party vendors find you suitable housing and not trying to place you in non-suitable locations.
Our office also makes sure you are aware of all available ALE insurance benefits so that you get all you are entitled to.
